The Love You’ve Been Looking For (God’s Unfailing Love)
Psalm 36:5,7 NLT Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. [7] How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.
Let’s be encouraged
When I think about love, I envision something sweet and tender. It’s a rare opportunity to truly be known by another. It creates an avenue of freedom to be authentically yourself, unafraid to reveal the parts you fear might not be accepted, and even then, knowing they are loved. Love offers safety and comfort during life’s hardest moments. It is a liberating force, a chainless existence where a person can simply be themselves. Love takes the time to pull you out of the depths of sorrow and weather the storms of tragedy and misfortune with you. Love does not discriminate because it thrives off what’s in the heart. This is the kind of love most of us yearn for but often struggle to articulate or find. Too often, we seek others to fulfill this craving for unconditional love, yet life’s experiences reveal that our love within relationships is often conditional, shaped by how others make us feel or what they provide, rather than an unwavering acceptance. So if the love we seek is hard to give, wouldn’t it be hard to find in another person?

God’s Love and Character
The unfailing love of the Lord is too deep to measure and cannot fully be understood; it’s constantly complemented by his unwavering faithfulness. It’s vast as the heavens, which cannot be fully explored, reaching beyond the clouds where it cannot be seen by the naked eye. Despite his greatness, God still chooses to dwell intimately with His creation. The Scripture essentially asks, “Who are we that you would think about and care for us?” (Ps. 8:4). God dwells with us because we were created in his image and likeness (Gen 1:26). He carefully breathed life into what He intended to nurture and entrust with His divine authority. Despite what we see and hear in the media, the Lord is kind. Psalm 86:15 says, “But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.”
Unfailing love can be defined as unconditional love, or love that never fails. It is a divine commitment that remains unbreakable and unaltered by circumstances or human imperfections. That’s why Scripture consistently emphasizes God’s faithfulness. In Psalm 36, David shares his personal experience of God’s love and goodness more vividly than the person who is wicked and stubborn. He takes time to compare God’s attributes with things like the ocean, which cannot be measured or contained. Contrary to belief, the Lord’s initial response isn’t anger or punishment but care and closeness, showing his desire to draw us closer with love. It is important to know “that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love!” (Rom. 8:35-39).
Let’s gain clarity
Many see God as stern and unforgiving. During difficult times or tragedies, we often ask, “Why did God let this happen?” without truly grasping his nature. Our perception of his goodness and love is often skewed because we project human actions or circumstances onto God. For example, if my parents hurt me, there’s no way God can love me. If something bad happens, God definitely doesn’t care about me. When relationships end, it’s because God wants me to be alone. Yet we rarely reflect on our own choices and contributions, made without seeking God’s guidance. Why do we blame God for our lust, schemes, and dishonesty when we face the consequences we deserve? Why is God held responsible for the actions of people who acted on their own will? If we call on God only in times of need and he doesn’t answer, does that mean he is unfaithful? How can someone be unfaithful to someone they were never in a relationship with? And why do we hold God to standards we haven’t believed in when things don’t turn out the way we want?
God is compassionate, loving, and kind, always waiting to be chosen by the people He created. He stands ready to respond, but most don’t ask for help; ready to be found, but most don’t look for him. He says, ‘Here I am, here I am’ to a people who often reject and try to blame him (Isa. 65:1-3). Proverbs 19:3 states, ‘People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the LORD.’ Just as we take time to understand our partners, friends, and loved ones, we must also take time to know God. We can do this by reading His word, praying, talking with him, and allowing him to influence our lives. Relationships end because some people only focus on what they can gain, always looking for benefit without considering what they must sacrifice to make it last. God’s ultimate expression of unfailing love is JESUS, his only Son, given so that we might be saved (John 3:16). This sacrifice grants us access to God the Father. God’s love is sacrificial and boundless, and it is “The Love You’ve Been Looking For!”
Prayer
God, thank you for your love, which is given freely and never fails. I thank you for always pursuing your people, even when they may not be looking for you. The love you offer is hard for some to receive because of what they’ve experienced or seen. I pray that you begin to purify their hearts so they can experience your goodness. Don’t allow the hurt, pain, and disappointment they’ve endured to keep them from you, Lord. Some are hurting and can’t see their way, while others may be angry because of unanswered questions. Father God, your word says, “You are close to the broken-hearted and that you rescue those who are crushed in spirit” (Ps. 34:18). So draw near to them today and help them navigate the season they are in. Thank you for being a father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5) and for comforting those without a mother (Isa. 66:13). The love they’ve been looking for in this world has always left them yearning for more. I pray that they understand that Jesus is the only love that can fill the void they’ve been feeling. Thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen!
